Some Final Thoughts

The varied sounds of the instruments would have been heard throughout Anglo-Saxon England, and life at the time without these instruments would have been very different. They represent many different levels of craftsmanship and would have been used for different purposes and in different situations. When you think about the past, of any time, think about the sounds which would have been heard, rather than a silent world.

A brief insight into the wind instruments of the time has been given here, string and percussion instruments also existed and it is possible other instruments were also in existence, with the evidence yet to be discovered, or having been lost.

Can you imagine what it may have sounded like in Anglo-Saxon England, potentially with several of these instruments playing at once?

Have a go at making some instruments from things that you can find that may have been around in Anglo-Saxon England.

Can you think what other instruments there could have been and what else you might have been able to make instruments from at the time?
